Prosthetics

Prosthetic dentistry deals with the replacement of teeth in cases where the teeth have been deteriorated by decay, injury or for other reasons.

Currently, prosthetic dentistry is still evolving and offers many options in the field of dental restorations. Today's trend is clearly towards the use of fixed or non-removable prostheses, which are the best solution for the patient. Both from a functional and aesthetic point of view. Thanks to the comfort of our own laboratory, we are able to pay individual attention to the patient during the production of prosthetics and make replacements even in a short time.

Main types of prosthetic restorations:

  • Aesthetic ceramic facet
     - Aesthetic veneers can be used to replace slight hard tissue loss, aesthetic imperfections of the tooth such as shape, colour and other defects caused by developmental damage, but they can also be used to change the entire smile. A veneer is a thin ceramic slice that is bonded to the tooth after the front of the tooth has been ground down.

  • Ceramic crown
     - A crown replaces a larger part of a tooth that has been destroyed by trauma or decay, while preserving the tooth root itself. In our practice, we can fabricate an all-ceramic or metal-ceramic crown to replace the damaged tooth both functionally and aesthetically.

  • Sensing prosthesis
     - A removable denture is a resin prosthesis that is not fixed and can be removed at will. Nowadays it is mainly used as a temporary solution, but it can also be used as a definitive solution for the loss of several or all teeth.

How it works

  • A crown on your own tooth
  • Ceramic implant crown

A crown on the tooth itself is most often made because the tooth is endodontically treated or there has been a large loss of hard tooth tissue

  1. First step

First, local anesthesia is applied and then the tooth is ground down to create enough space for the crown to be made.

  2. Second step

After the grinding (preparation) of the tooth, the gum is pulled back so that the edge of the preparation is clearly visible in the impression or on the digital image from the scanner.

  3. Third step

The next step is to take an impression of the teeth, opposing teeth and bite registration. In our office we now use a scanner very often instead of impressions. During the scan, we run a "camera" over the patient's teeth and transmit the information to the lab in a fully digital form. However, in some situations - especially the more complex ones - an impression is still preferable.

  4. Fourth step

Choice of colour - for front teeth, we choose the colour together with the dental technician; in other cases, the doctor chooses the best shade himself.

  5. Fifth step

Crown production in the dental laboratory.

  6. Sixth step

In the next visit we fix the made crown.

  1. First step

Imprint or digital scan of the implant.

  2. Second step

Choice of colour - for front teeth, we choose the colour together with the dental technician; in other cases, the doctor and the patient choose the best shade.

  3. Third step

Crown production in the dental laboratory.

  4. Fourth step

Crown transfer - the doctor screws the crown onto the implant and closes the slot leading to the screw with a white filling. The crown can then be removed from the implant if necessary. Today, crowns bonded to implants are only made in specific cases.

You often ask

  • How many implants are needed to make a total fixed replacement of the upper and lower jaw?

Usually 4-6 implants are needed for the upper jaw, depending on the size of the jaw and the number of teeth the fixed restoration will have. In the lower jaw, 4-5 implants are usually placed.

  • What is the dental implant made of and can I have an MRI with it?

The implant is made of titanium alloy and is very well tolerated by the human body. In case of extreme intolerance to titanium, there is an alternative option in the form of zirconium implants. It is possible to undergo a Magentic Denture without any problems, it is only advisable to alert the clinic performing this examination to the fact that you have dental implants in place.

  • Can I whiten my teeth even if I have dental crowns?

Teeth can only be whitened by yourself. Crowns, veneers and fillings cannot be whitened. If you have crowns in the back sections, the whitening does not interfere and the other teeth can be whitened. If the crown is in the front section and you don't mind that it won't whiten then whitening is also possible. If you have more questions you can consult our dental hygienist.

  • How is tooth loss in a pediatric patient treated prosthetically?

If a child loses a temporary tooth prematurely, it is very difficult to replace it. At the time of jaw growth, it is not possible to make restorations that would restrict jaw growth. For this reason, it is not possible to make bridges or implants to address the gap in the teeth in adult patients. In the case of extensive tooth loss, it is possible to make so-called gap restorations. These are restorations similar to full dentures. Unfortunately, due to the rapid growth of the child, dentures are only functional for a very limited period of time and are often poorly accepted by children.

In the case of loss of a permanent tooth in the frontal section of the dentition in childhood, the defect can be aesthetically solved with an adhesive bridge. This is a replacement crown with a small wing that is adhesively attached to only one of the adjacent teeth and thus does not affect the growth of the jaw.

  • From what age do I qualify for dentures covered by insurance and how often?

The patient is entitled to a complete removable denture every four years. Age does not matter.
