What is periodontitis?

After dental caries, periodontitis is one of the most common diseases of the gums and tissues that periodontology deals with. Among the public it is more commonly known under the incorrect term periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a suspensory disease of the tooth. The tooth is suspended by a complex system of fibrous fibers, an integral part of which is a good cervical closure, which is the connection of the gingival margin to the neck of the tooth. If this system is damaged for a long time, periodontitis develops and if it is not treated in time, it can lead to the premature loss of a tooth or even the entire dentition. This results in malfunctions in the function of the teeth and, in visible places, very significant aesthetic defects.

What causes periodontitis?

People often ask how "periodontal disease" occurs. Periodontitis is caused by bacteria and their toxins. Bacteria multiply in the areas between the teeth and gums, creating so-called plaque - bacterial coating on the tooth. If the plaque is not removed from the interdental spaces, then mineral deposits create tartar, which is an ideal base for further layers of plaque. Because tartar sticks very stubbornly to the surface of the tooth, a normal toothbrush is usually not enough and a professional cleaning is required dental hygienist. If calculus and plaque are not removed in time, inflammation can spread, which can lead to the loss of the jawbone and the supporting fibers of the tooth, and in the worst case, the loss of the tooth.

Stadia parodontitidy:

  • lehký zánět dásně (gingivitida)
  • silný zánět dásně a závěsného aparátu zubu (parodontitida)
  • Masivní zánět a úbytek kosti
